Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Lere Oyewumi, has actively joined the South West Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, taking place at the Water Cress Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State.
The hearing, which is part of the ongoing nationwide constitutional amendment process, is being conducted by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, chaired by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele of Ekiti State.
Senator Oyewumi, who represents Osun West Senatorial District, reaffirmed his commitment to a people-driven constitutional reform process, stressing the importance of inclusive dialogue in shaping a more equitable, democratic, and prosperous Nigeria.
The Lagos hearing has brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders from the South West geopolitical zone, including national and state legislators, traditional rulers, representatives of civil society organizations, women and youth groups, and various advocacy networks. Their collective presence underscores the significance of the constitutional review process and the desire of Nigerians to see meaningful reforms.
“This process is about the future of Nigeria,” Senator Oyewumi said. “We must seize this opportunity to build a Constitution that reflects the aspirations of our people and guarantees justice, equity, and good governance across all levels.”
The Zonal Public Hearings, organized by the National Assembly across the six geopolitical zones, are designed to ensure grassroots participation in identifying and addressing critical areas for constitutional amendment, including devolution of powers, state policing, electoral reforms, local government autonomy, judicial independence, and gender inclusion, among others.
